How Many Words Does Spanish Have
Theres little question that Spanish has fewer words than Englishà ââ¬âà but does that matter? How Many Words Are in the Spanish Language? There is no way to give an exact answer about how many words a language has. Except perhaps in the case of some minor languages with very limited vocabulary or obsolete or artificial languages, there is no agreement among authorities about which words are a legitimate part of a language or how to count them. Furthermore, any living language is in a continual state of change. Both Spanish and English are continuing to add wordsà ââ¬âà English primarily, through the addition of technology-related words and words related to popular culture, while Spanish expands in the same way and through the adoption of English words. Heres one way to compare the two languages vocabularies: Current editions of the Diccionario de la Real Academia Espaà ±ola (the Dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy), the closest thing there is to an official list of Spanish vocabulary, has around 88,000 words. In addition, the Academys list of Americanismos (Americanisms) includes about 70,000 words used in one or more Spanish-speaking countries of Latin America. So to round things off, figure there are around 150,000 official Spanish words. In contrast, the Oxford English Dictionary has about 600,000 words, but that includes words that are no longer in use. It has full definitions of around 230,000 words. The makers of the dictionary estimate that when all is said and done, there are, at the very least, a quarter of a million distinct English words, excluding inflections, and words from technical and regional vocabulary not covered by the OED, or words not yet added to the published dictionary. There is one count that puts the English vocabulary at about 1 million wordsà ââ¬âà but that count presumably includes words such as Latin species names (which are also used in Spanish), prefixed and suffixed words, jargon, foreign words of extremely limited English use, technical acronyms, and the like, making the gigantic count as much of a gimmick as anything else. All that said, it is probably fair to say that English has about twice as many words as does Spanishà ââ¬âà assuming that the conjugated forms of verbs arent counted as separate words. Large college-level English dictionaries typically include around 200,000 words. Comparable Spanish dictionaries, on the other hand, typically have around 100,000 words. Latin Influx Expanded English One reason that English has a larger vocabulary is that it is a language with Germanic origins but tremendous Latin influence, an influence so great that sometimes English seems more like French than it does like Danish, another Germanic language. The merging of two streams of language into English is one reason why we have both the words late and tardy, words often interchangeable, while Spanish (at least as an adjective) in everyday use has the only tarde. The most similar influence that happened to Spanish was an infusion of Arabic vocabulary, but the influence of Arabic on Spanish isnt close to the influence of Latin on English. The fewer number of words in Spanish, however, doesnt mean that it cant be just as expressive as English; sometimes it is more so. One feature that Spanish has when compared to English is a flexible word order. Thus the distinction that is made in English between dark night and gloomy night might be made in Spanish by saying noche oscura and oscura noche, respectively. Spanish also has two verbs that are the rough equivalent of the English to be, and the choice of a verb can change the meaning (as perceived by English speakers) of other words in the sentence. Thus estoy enferma (I am sick) is not the same as soy enferma (I am sickly). Spanish also has verb forms, including a much-used subjunctive mood, that can provide nuances of meaning sometimes absent in English. Finally, Spanish speakers frequently use suffixes to provide shades of meaning. All living languages seem to have the ability to express what needs expressing. Where a word doesnt exist, speakers find a way to come up with oneà ââ¬âà whether by coining one, adapting an older word to new use, or importing one from another language. Thats no less true of Spanish than of English, so Spanishs smaller vocabulary shouldnt be seen as a sign that Spanish speakers are less able to say what needs saying. Sources Dictionary. What Causes People s Behaviors Change Over Time Essay
What causes peopleââ¬â¢s behaviors change over time? It is the society shift as a whole or it is the little things that gradually affects humans? Each generation has its own special traits, and these traits are depending on the surrounding environment-immediate context. The Immediate context is words or behaviors that people are using nowadays have their meanings, which connects to surrounding environment. For example, the idea of self-esteem is one of the words that arise by the generation in 1990s. The words do not appear suddenly; instead, words are appearing because of the surrounding environment and peopleââ¬â¢s beliefs are changing and then this new idea appears. In The Power of Context, the author Malcolm Gladwell, introduces that peopleââ¬â¢s beliefs and convictions do not really matter to the society because peopleââ¬â¢s actions are changing the surrounding environment. There are little things that exist in the surrounding environment that influences human behav iors, which is the main reason that social changes have occurred. In An Army of One: Me, the author Jean Twenge, compares situations under the idea of ââ¬Ëself-esteemâ⬠and the society is over-popularized the idea of ââ¬Å"meâ⬠. This social problem causes the unbalanced understanding of normal tasks and over trended to individualism and self-centered. Northern vs Southern States, Education Essay Example For Students
Northern vs Southern States, Education Essay It seems important to understand the similarities of the colonial regions in order to comprehend the implications they had. By comparing the Middle Colonies and New England, and by contrasting the future North to the South, it becomes relatively easy to draw patterns. In 1760, the population in New England counts 16,000 Africans, 29,000 for the Middle Colonies whereas the South populates 205,000 Africans. Slavery is then mainly concentrated in the South, involving more agrarian activities and land farmers. Life expectancy in New England and the Middle Colonies were higher while death rates were superior in the South. The cities mainly initiated in New England and then followed by the Middle Colonies. South colonies had smaller towns, more fields. Nevertheless, cities involve more social problems such as crime and vice. The rural exodus of poor people to the cities explains the reason Revolutionary crisis started in the cities. New England and the Middle Colonies (to a smaller degree) symbolized the industrial power where industries such as metal manufacturing, lumbering, mining and fishing were predominant in these regions. For the most part, they were white workers (artisans, crafters, silver working) and the trades would take place between the colonies. To the contrary of these two regions, the South would focus more on massive slaves work to grow tobacco and rice that they would sell to England. As we can notice, the two trading systems have different markets. New England and the Middle colonies would trade more internally, helping merchants with the Act of Navigation, whereas the South targets England as a market for more commercial trades. Concerning religion and education, New England primary had universities based on a religious belief (i.e., Harvard and Yale) but progressively went to a religious liberalism. The Middle Colonies were famous for their religious pluralism, one of the first universities was Princeton in New Jersey. New England and the Middle Colonies had smaller families but more stable whereas the South had just the opposite with higher death rates. As a general statement, the two fundamental movements of the Great Awakening and the Enlightenment help people open up their mind and think more critically. All these factors contributed for New England and the Middle Colonies to become the North.

Leadership is defined as, a person who guides or directs a group (Hersey, Blanchard amp; Johnson, 2008). To be a great leader there are certain qualities that must be held. Examples of some of the skills required are, having the ability to influence, understand each situation, be authoritative and give direction in a positive manner in order to maximize the greatest potential from your employees. Use your employeeââ¬â¢s strengths in a manner that is most beneficial for the company. Remember that people make the company. A great leader learns from experience. Leaders do not know everything. A valuable tool to utilize is listening to your employees. Take advantage of data provided and absorb the information, use it to your advantage. A great philosophy is that there are no dumb questions. Evaluate every situation and make the decision and if a mistake is made, use it as a learning tool. What type of leadership is needed for this specific business? L = f (l, f, s) The equation for leadership is L = f (l, f, s) (Hersey, Blanchard amp; Johnson, 2008). In translation, leadership is a function of the leader, the follower and other situational variables. There are numerous characteristics that are needed in building a successful business in being an event specialist. The goal of the business is to provide a pleasurable, memorable experience and if there are negative reviews the reputation of the company is at risk. Reputation in this type of business is an important factor in being successful. It is a highly competitive market and in order to be one of the best, the service provided has to be of the utmost quality. Employees have to be led in an organized manner in order to get the event fulfilled with no major issues or setbacks. Meeting or exceeding the expectations of the client the event is designed for is the major factor in becoming and maintaining a successful business. Theory ââ¬Å"Xâ⬠vs. Theory ââ¬Å"Yâ⬠The ââ¬Å"Xâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Yâ⬠theories both come into play in this type of business. The situational demand of the specific environment is a factor in determining the type of leadership approach that is needed. Theory ââ¬Å"Xâ⬠is defined as an authoritarian leader. This type of leadership is needed for guiding employees. The focus has to be placed on the task at hand. There is great detail that has to be satisfied in order for the event to successful. The emphasis on organization is important. Required responsibilities have to be defined to each employee. The expectation of what the employee is responsible for, when it is expected and how their tasks are accomplished has to be communicated to each employee. Consistent and effective leadership is required. Consistency between the leader and the employee enhances the learning ability of the employee to become the best he/she can be. Effective leadership will build the confidence of the employee and eventually he/she will be able to perform the tasks on their own with little guidance from the employer. Theory ââ¬Å"Yâ⬠is defined as a democratic leader who focuses on the people or relationship. In the event planning business this element is important for communicating with the customer. People skills are a must. The relationship built is a form of trust that the customer is placing on you to provide the service. Trust is not only important for the customer but is important when dealing with vendors such as, photographers, caterers, hotels, rental halls, musicians etc. The relationship needs to be built and maintained so the vendors will be willing to work with your company on future engagements. Once this is developed with the vendors, the vendor becomes familiar with your expectations. The ability to communicate is established and the expectations are easily conveyed. Situational Leadership Task Behavior vs. Relationship Behavior Both task behavior and relationship behavior are major components in establishing a lucrative event planning business. Task behavior is one way communication between the leader and the follower (Hersey, Blanchard amp; Johnson, 2008). The responsibilities must be defined so the employee will know what is expected of him/her. If the tasks are not defined the employee is set up to fail. Communication is an integral part of getting the employee to become the best he/she can be. Positive communication empowers the employee to give all they have and builds the esteem that is needed to be their best. If the employee has little or no knowledge of what is expected of them the scheduled event could become a disaster. Relationship behavior is the leader participating in two-way or multi-way communication. (Hersey, Blanchard amp; Johnson, 2008). Building a relationship with an employee through listening, facilitating and giving an explanation on why something has to be done a certain way helps the employee understand why he is performing in the way to get the optimum result. Relationship behavior offers support which builds the confidence level of the employee. S1-S4, R1-R4 There is no set guideline on what is the best way to inspire people. The leadership style used should be contingent on the level of competency the employee has regarding the task that he/she is required to handle. There are four basic leadership styles. Style 1 (S1) is needed when you have an R1 employee (defined as an employee who is unable, insecure and unwilling to do the required task). S1 leadership is a high task/low relationship. The communication is one way and directives are given to the employee. Close supervision is required. There is not much room in the event planning business for this type of employee. The leader does not have the time to invest unless there is potential to build the confidence and attitude of the employee and change them from an RI type to an R2 or above. Style 2 (S2) is needed when you have an R2 employee (defined as an employee who is unable but confident or willing). S2 leadership is a high task/high relationship. Through two- way communication as the leader makes the decisions that the employee can follow. The leader needs to give praise and constantly evaluate the employee to see if they understand what is expected. This type of employee can possibly become a great employee if the ability to maintain the knowledge exists. Style 3 (S3) is needed when you have an R3 employee (defined as an employee who is able but is insecure or unwilling). S3 leadership is high relationship/low task relationship. The leadership encourages input, listens, letââ¬â¢s the employee make decisions and gives positive comments when the task is completed with no issues and when issues occur this leadership skill provides constructive criticism. This type of employee is worth investing in but the key for the event planning business is to turn them into an R4 employee. If this type of employee cannot build the confidence within himself/herself they become a liability that the leader has to watch over and there is no time for that in the event planning business. Style 4 (S4) is needed when you have an R4 employee (defined as an employee who is able, confident and willing). S4 leadership is low relationship/low task. The employee has the ability to know what needs to be done and little or no supervision is required. This is the perfect employee and is a must in the event planning business. If the employer has the time to invest in order to turn an average employee to a great employee they should do so. The ability to identify the needs of the employee in order to gain self-confidence can be developed into a valuable asset for the company. If the employee has the ability to grasp the knowledge conveyed to them the employer can mold them to fit their specific needs. Management Who Carries the Monkey on Their Back in the Event Planning Business? If the event planning business is owned privately by one or two individuals the monkey is carried on the back of the owners. Ultimately the owners are responsible if there is a failure. If the business is owned by a Corporation then it is the manager/leader in charge of the venue that is responsible for carrying the monkey. This is where the importance of hiring the right people for the job and training is important. Multiple tasks are going on during the event and management has to have confidence that their employees are fulfilling their portion of the detailed duties that are required. Value Added vs. Non Value Added Value added and non- value added in relation to the event planning business. People are willing to spend large sums of money to have the perfect wedding or celebration. The event planning business provides a service and if a customer pays for a service it must be provided. Value added is vital. One meticulous detail could be the determining factor if an event is a success or failure. If a contract is generated for a set amount and small details are not accounted for the event specialist could lose money or damage the companyââ¬â¢s reputation. Non value added could be the deal breaker on whether you get the contract to host the event or lose it to another event specialist. The customer wants all and more for the dollar they are spending. If two contracts are being reviewed and there is non-value added services quoted the customer will notice and go with the company who can meet their expectations at the lowest price. Examples of non-value added are, if a customer pays for ten cases of champagne when only 8 were needed or if excessive food quoted. It is crucial that the event specialist knows how to quote for items such as food, refreshments, decorations, entertainment etc. Spending must meet quoted cost while maintaining quality service. CONCLUSION Leadership and management have two different skill sets. A manager focuses on the, how and when. A leader focuses on the, what and why. Neither skill set is better than the other. Influence and leadership skills can be switched to fit the needs at that moment. The type of leader/manager needed at that moment depends on the situation. The statement leads self/lead others has power. Lead self, lead others analogy. Learn to recognize changes that need to be made. Situations arise and how they are handled is noticed by the people around you. Learn self-control in your thoughts and actions in order to maintain the respect of the employees who look to you for guidance. This ability is hard to maintain but is a necessity needed in maintaining the business and building future business. The event planning business is very competitive. There is a large market and people are willing to spend the money in order to have the perfect event. Lifetime memories are created. If there are major issues and complications the reputation of the company becomes perceived in a negative way, which affects business. If the event is not pleasurable to the customer a treasured memory is damaged and can be devastating to the client. The event planning business is a detailed and organized profession. If those qualities can be achieved and retained the establishment should be rewarding and profitable. References Oncken, W. , Wass, D. L. , amp; Covey, S. R. (1999). Transition essays
Transition essays The pace of college is very different to get use to coming out of high school. College teachers like to get to the point and move along with the lesson. Ive learned if you dont understand something in class then you should try to study it outside of class. Many times I will be in class and the teacher will say something that I dont understand. Many of my classes do not have weekly assignments either. Im use to having weekly homework from high school. Although not having assignments due regularly is better for me because I tend to forget things very easily. Ive given a lot of thought in to how I spend my time here in college. A year ago my time management was a complete mess. Ive learned to get better by writing stuff down to remind me of what I need to do for the day. It was very difficult for me to juggle school, pledge ship and my social life at first coming here. It was a repeat of being late, unorganized and lost. I believe that I have improved a lot though with time management and staying more organized, because I essentially have to. I have to utilize the time that is given to me everyday because of my tight schedule of school and then pledge ship. Equilibrium of happiness and academics is important. My new fraternity is a lot of fun so I enjoy doing that. Some of my happiness is still in San Diego with the beach but I am learning to deal with it. A few things that have been difficult are not being in San Diego, and dealing with a change in every way. I had to get use to all the streets, get use to the new college grounds, get use to the diverse people , get use to all my classes and get use to my new fraternity. I dont think anything was particularly easy here. I enjoy having new freedom that I had never had before. Although my parents were pretty easy going it is just not the same. Independence is a positive and negative thing in my eyes. My independence is fun and also a lit...

The Unpositives of the Dick and Carey Model Research Paper
The Unpositives of the Dick and Carey Model - Research Paper Example The method involves some disadvantages that hinder the effectiveness of the instruction process (Woolf & International Conference on Intelligent Tutoring Systems, 2008). The methodology, when looked at closely, displays some suggestions. Firstly, the design involves the reduction model which disintegrates the components into simpler components. This implies that the teacher requires adopting a careful method of delivering the components to avoid losing track. Secondly, the tutor requires adopting the proper learning conditions. The wrong use of the conditioning learning can sometimes result in poor understanding from the pupilsââ¬â¢ side. Thirdly, there appears the need for the application of an instructional system design: the system design requires adopting the system that facilitates instruction designing. Fourthly, the tutor requires implementing an extensively range of ideas including K12, business, administration, beginner, and expert (Woolf & International Conference on Int elligent Tutoring Systems, 2008). The model summarizes the methodology plan and development process. The authors view a system as, in principle, a combination of parts that rely on each other to facilitate the intended goal. The model acquired the name ââ¬Ësystem approachââ¬â¢ since it comprises components that relate to one another. The components have input and output. This means that a wrong input definitely results to a negative input. Dick and Carey view that the model uses the system approach with credible reasoning (Woolf & International Conference on Intelligent Tutoring Systems, 2008). The systematic approach implies that the moment the teacher messes up the strategy, the whole procedure of learning ends up messed up. The results might imply that the teacher lost track of what the learner was required to learn. The components of the system though closely linked together might result into the wrong output since the input in the first place was wrong. The process involv ed in the system is practicable and can be replicated. The step that takes place in the ISD utilizes a set of procedures and techniques that the instructional designers require to adopt in planning, expanding, and assessing instructions (Woolf & International Conference on Intelligent Tutoring Systems, 2008). The steps adopted include identification of the instructional goals; at this juncture, the instructor should identify the syllabus coverage as the course culminates. The goals require taking into consideration the needs considerations and the requirements of the learner. The instructors are required to identify the steps and sub-steps that will facilitate attainment of the goals by the learner. Instructional analysis scrutinizes the skills, know-hows, and attitudes that the learnerââ¬â¢s exhibit and the ones they are supposed to hold prior to the instruction session. These skills can also be termed as the entry behaviors. The learner and the contexts that facilitate their le arning are scrutinized in parallel in the course of instruction analysis. The learnersââ¬â¢ skills at the beginning of the instructions, preferences and attitudes become evident at this stage. The instruction situation where the new skills apply undergoes some analysis. The information attained at this stage becomes vital as it determines the strategy to be adopted in the course of the instruction

Media, Information and Societal Problems Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Media, Information and Societal Problems - Essay Example They manipulate the sources of information in a manner that suits their purpose. This way, only ideas that are allowed to prosper are the ones that the ruling class wants the masses to have. Amongst them one is the concept that social classes are natural and cannot be changed. The main cause of most social problems arises when people are led to act in a manner that is against their will, just so they can conform to the societal standards. Classes and Societal Problems Firstly, this concept of the lower-class cannot reach beyond their material means can actually have dramatic impact on their performance due to self-fulfilling prophecy. This also means if people belonging to lower stratum of the society are led to believe that they cannot achieve more actually may not achieve more if the concept is forced onto them (Ornstein & Levine 11). This I believe is very detrimental to growth of the society. Secondly the damage to intellectual thought and idea generation I believe, is the main p roblem caused by the ââ¬Å"hegemonyâ⬠proposed by Gramsci: if thought and ideas are trapped and left to conform to societal standards that serve only the affluent, there would not be any progress. ... This way we end up incurring a great deal of cost which then appears to be necessary. It is hegemony because the producers would not just let us buy the product we actually need. This blind following of the popular opinion leads the masses to do acts that are against their will. Practically the proletariat follows the ideology propagated by the bourgeois; they incur unnecessary expenses push themselves into debt just to meet the social pretences that have been laid out by the prevalent ideology. So in an attempt to serve societal interests the masses are actually damaging their own interests. An example would be that it was perceived that masses should have significant cash in deposits for their future needs, perhaps investments were high risk. So the US banks had a huge influx of deposits. On the surface it appears that banks would be happy with the investments, but managing such huge deposits also means they would be required to pay interests on them. So eventually some banks chose to charge fees on accounts that had large deposits. This way it was the end-consumer who had to pay the price. Role of Media One of the key distinctions of mass media from other forms of media is its ability to address a large number of people at the same time. Media is the mouth piece of the society; it is supposed to express popular public opinion. However in light of Marxist Capitalist economy, the media is controlled by the upper classes that use it to serve their interests. Media play a key role in shaping the perceptions of the society; they do this by means of advertising and programming. Both advertising and programming serve as a means of creating hegemony. This is
